CODED ISOLATION, Final Project by Sreeraghavi Mani

A modular fabric origami chamber-like structure that encapsulates the feeling of living in isolation, embellished with Morse code embroidery. It symbolizes the emotional experiences that each of us are going through in the quarantined lifestyle during this pandemic – where I can express in a way that is explicit, yet ciphered.

At a time when it is hard to gather the strength to stay alone and stand strong, this piece is a representation of what I feel in this period of quarantine- emotionally, and physically. It has been six weeks since we have been forced to stay home. Like it is nature’s way of telling us to go into our rooms and reflect on what we’ve done. Like we have taken nature for granted, exploited our resources, and continued to do so despite global climatic warnings. Like it took a virus, an invisible lethal micro-mutating-entity to make us realise the importance of our own independence, the love for our dear ones, empathy towards everyone alike, and respect the heroes fighting everyday on the front line to save the lives of those affected.

But on the downside, have we really understood all of this? Have we really changed? Did we wait for things to get better, or did we act as usual – ignorant?

Amidst the hatred, negativity and isolation, origami acted as a therapeutic way to meditate, escape from the harsh reality while being present in it, and representing it. Using origami to make this isolated chamber to reflect on the effects of the pandemic symbolises – perspective, persistence, patience and practice.

A chamber made in the form of a semi cylindrical tessellated structure is a representation of isolation, the grief of losses as well as the comfort of staying safe.

Prototype

Morse code is used for writing the snippets of emotions, a medium to express explicitly, yet discreet since not everyone knows to read the code.
