The interpretation of the relation between Jacquard loom and Analytical Engine seemed interesting, especially with the use of expressions that aren’t merely technical but also emotional. Ada’s passion for not just mathematics, but the urge for a woman in the mid 1800s to not be bound by the societal expectations of minding the staff, and domestic chores – and rise above to be more ambitious and achieve her goals is fascinating.
The way Ada’s writing is described to be metaphorical is also interesting – especially from the sentence “the analytical engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard looms weaves flowers and leaves”. (1)
This not just reminds me of our brainstorming session in class – how different combinations of words became something more meaningful, but also the power of words in today’s time – how it changes stories and perceptions entirely.
Coming from a country that still has women who don’t have access to education, or the freedom to pursue dreams, I wonder if that day when every woman makes her decisions herself is anytime near.
